It tells you how many silver and gold keys - and how many hardmode runs - you still need to get your gear sets to full Ascended, Mythic, or Heroic.
Fill in how many items you own of each rarity in the Knight, Wizard, Ranger, Noble, and Rogue sets, add the two key drop chances from your in-game stat overview screen (or scan a screenshot of it), and the estimates update as you type. Everything you enter is saved in your browser automatically.
"This number is assuming you only do hardmode runs, because daily events and modes with different heroes and loadouts have a different key drop chance."
Three gear items of one rarity merge into one item of the next rarity up, so every rarity is worth exactly three times the one below it. Counting a Common as 1 point, a Heroic item is worth 2,187 points, and a full set with all 6 slots at Heroic is 13,122 points.
The calculator adds up the points you already own across all five sets, works out how many you are missing for each milestone, and converts that into keys using the community's measured averages: a silver chest gives about 1.4 points and a gold chest about 9.22 points. Each hardmode run gives two key drop chances, which is where the run counts come from.
The leaderboard uses the same point system but counts your whole inventory - every item you own of every rarity, which is why it keeps counting past full Heroic.
Based on the community "Gear and Key Calculator V3.1" spreadsheet by @Gmunki, @IAmHappie, and @MarioVX - all credit for the model and the measured chest averages goes to them. Math version: Sheet V3.1.
