You lose to someone with a lower Powerscore in Hero Clash because the Powerscore is only a rough estimate of their power. You need to multiply the opponent's Powerscore by 2-2.5x to get your Powerscore equivalent.
You can also click on their avatar and look at their talent levels and gear score to better scout their true power when choosing when to battle them.
